Responsibilities

  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle; sets correct destination and route signs
  • Operates various types of vehicles, as assigned, safely, in all types of weather and traffic conditions, according to printed passenger schedules and Operators schedules
  • Arrives and signs in on time; works hours as scheduled; wears clean, neat uniform
  • Picks up and discharges passengers at designated bus stops safely; regulates heating and ventilating equipment on the bus for the comfort of passengers
  • Follows fare collection procedures which includes INIT, GFI, farebox, and Presto; guards against transfer abuse;
  • Reports all accidents, incidents, or unusual occurrences to dispatch office immediately; submits written reports on accidents, incidents or unusual occurrences as required
  • Accurately completes all reports
  • Follows rules and regulations of the Company
  • When the automatic stop calling is in operative, driver must call out the stop
  • Provides transit information to passengers as needed

Requirements

Education, Licensing, and Certifications Required:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (eg. Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or valid work permit.)
  • Hold a valid BZ driver’s license in good standing
  • A clean driver’s abstract and commercial vehicle operator’s registration is required
  • Possess a Grade 12 diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • Previous bus or other heavy-duty vehicle driving experience with a minimum of six (6) months experience

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Must possess strong verbal and written English language skills
  • Excellent customer service skills and communicating with the public
  • Willing to work split shifts, night shifts, weekend shifts and holidays on a rotating basis
  • You must own or have access to reliable transportation to come and go from work

Physical Requirements:

  • Must pass Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol Screening Test and Criminal Background Check
  • The individuals interested in this position must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job. Those demands include but are not limited to: sitting for prolonged periods of time, using extreme motion such as gripping, reaching, push/pull of steering wheel, twisting and turning of neck and back, sensory/perceptual demands along with good concentration, visual acuity and colour vision deemed safe for driving to judge distances, fine finger movements such as keying in data in the farebox keypad.                        

 WHAT TO EXPECT in the role of Transit Driver with Miller Transit:

  • You will operate various conventional or articulated buses on routes and time schedules or charters as required.
  • You will be responsible for collecting fares, responding to customer inquiries concerning transit information and ensuring the safety of all customers.
  • You will be required to consistently demonstrate at all times attentiveness, good judgement, safe driving habits, and an ability to deal effectively and professionally with all customers.
  • As each day is unique, flexibility is required of this job; this is a unionized position
